Moving Barriers. Creating Space. Empowering Journeys, Anna’s Journey

At Nomadic Currents, we believe that travel, like movement itself, belongs to everyone. But for many, the world is still filled with invisible barriers. Our Inclusive Resources section exists to spotlight the tools, communities, and stories that help all travellers move with greater freedom.

This is Ana’s story.

Ana, a 28-year-old artist from London, uses a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy. While she’s always loved the idea of travel, she often felt it was reserved for the able-bodied. Booking accommodations, navigating airports, finding accessible local transport — each step presented obstacles.

“I used to think travel wasn’t meant for people like me,” Ana said when I first spoke with her about Nomadic Currents. “It felt like the world was closed off.”

That changed when she discovered online communities like Accessible Travel Hub and apps like Wheelmap and AccessNow. Through these platforms, Ana found detailed accessibility reviews of hotels, attractions, and public transport across Europe.

Her first solo trip was to Barcelona. Using her newfound resources: She’d  booked an accessible room in a boutique hotel.
She told me she had mapped out accessible metro stops, and connected with local disabled travellers who shared tips on navigating the city.

“Rolling down La Rambla in my chair with the sun on my face, now that was freedom,” said Anna “I realised travel isn’t about ticking off destinations; it’s about reclaiming space and writing your own story.”

Ana’s journey didn’t stop there. She’s now a passionate advocate for accessible travel and regularly shares tips with fellow travellers online and has also promised to share more stories on Nomadic Currents.
